194 OBITUARY:

Joe Robles Figueroa, a longtime resident of Safford, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at his residence, with his loving wife, Virginia, and their family at his bedside. Joe was 82.

Joe was born Nov. 17, 1934, to Adela Robles and Juan Usaraga Figueroa. He entered into the family of three brothers and two sisters. joe was the baby of the family. At the ripe old age of 4 years old, his father passed away. Joe's mother was left with no one to watch little Joe while she was at work. The owner of Shorty's Cafe put him to work, giving him little jobs here and there. After Joe would finish with all his chores, the boss would give him a plate of food as payment for his hard work.

At the age of 11 or 12 years old, Joe went to work at Michilina's Store in Solomon. He later worked at Carasco's for a while and, when he was of age, he went to work at Safeway. Joe worked hard as usual and promptly became assistant manager. He married the love of his life, Virginia, in March of 1956.

Joe decided he wanted to go into the military and enlisted in the National Guard. He went to Fort Huachuca in Siera Vista. Upon returning, Joe went to work at Long's Furniture store as a salesman and deliveryman. After working for some time at Long's, he then went to work at Sears. He worked hard as usual, becoming assistant manager there, too. during this time, Joe became a certified embalmer and drove the ambualnce for Roger David at Safford Funeral Home.

In the early 1970's, Joe was instrumental in helping start the current Graham County Search and Rescue Squad. In 1973, he obtained work for a short time with Eastern Arizona College. Always looking to better himself, Joe gained employment with Phelps Dodge Copper Mining Corporation in Morenci. He had several jobs there, starting out on the truck crew before he moved up to the blasting crew. Jow ran heavy equipment for a short time, until he found his dream job. He stuck tohis favorite job of driving haul trucks for the next 20 or so years. In 2000, Joe went to work driving the bus that took employees to and from work. At one time, he also drove a bus taking people on tours of the mine in retirement, Joe and Virginia began touring and visiting all the states. They went on cruises and visited Africa, Spain, Greece, the Holy Land and many other countries.

It is with a heavy heart we send you on your way to your eternal destiny. Until we meet again.

Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia; his son, Michael Figueroa (Brenda); his daughter, Elizabeth Figueroa (Randy Damron); his sister, Alicia Martinez; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; and nine step grandchildren.

195 OBITUARY:

Juan (John) R. Figueroa was born June 18, 195, in Phoenix to Juan and Adela Robles Figueroa. He was the fifth of seven children, including Roberto, Virginia, Gilberto, Alicia, Miguel and Jose.

In an era of the Great Depression, Juan remembered the family's struggles and told of his experiences standing in soup lines and collecting food rations. Work was hard to come by and his parents sought new opportunities for their family. So they decided to return to the Gila Valley and relocated to Solomonville when he was 5 years old. He attended school in Solomonville until his ninth grade year.

He had a very busy schedule during school days. John delivered the Arizona Republic every morning, went to school, worked as a delivery boy after school, and then he would return to the school to work as a janitor for a small wage and to receive lunches while at school.

In 1942, John went to Santa Ana, Calif., to live with his brother, Gilbert, and his sister, Virginia, with the hopes of continuing his education. Because of World War II, John decided to go to work instead. He worked several odd jobs, such as picking oranges, working in the canneries and on a construction crew, but was laid off when it was discovered that he was only 17 years old. During these years, Juan developed many traits, such as hard work, perseverance and resilience.

He returned to Solmonville in October of 1942, and although only 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy.

He proudly served for three years, of which two and a half were spent abroad. One of the distinctions of his years of service was that he served on the U.S.S. Maryland, which saw more action in the South Pacific than any other battleship. his ship was damaged by torpedoes and kamikazes. It was through these experiences that Juan developed lifelong skills such as camaraderie, dedication and loyalty not only to his family, but to his peers and to his country.

John started dating Priscilla Quiroz when he was home on leave in 1945. They continued their courtship via mail and soon discovered they had both found the loves of their lives. he was honorably discharged in march 1946.

Shortly after his discharge, he and Priscilla were married June 15. 1946, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Solomon. The couple enjoyed 63 1/2 years together before Priscilla's death in 2010.

They moved to Morenci, where they raised their family (Rebecca, Navarrette, Mary Lou Peralta, John Figueroa and Carol Navarette) for the next 30 years. He was assigned to work in the smelter division, which, although not a glamorous job by any means, provided a decent income for him and his family for 39 years. John worked his way into the hierarchy of the smelter. He started out as a laborer, moved up to a foreman's position and then went on to become a general foreman of the smelter reverbs.

Juan served as supervisor to many fine men and women, and was often greeted by former co-workers in his retirement years. He was always commended not only for his hard work, but for his ability to work beside his employees and to be fair and compassionate supervisor.

Because he had been unable to complete his education, John decided to take GED courses. He said one of the most difficult things he did in his life was to go back to school and the books. It was a proud moment for him to complete his GED in 1967. At this point, he realized the importance of education and instilled that in his children and grandchildren.

Juan and Priscilla believed strongly in community involvement. While living in Morenci, they were member of Lloyd D. Hill American legion Post #28. They were active supporters of their children and grandchildren in the sports they played and transported many of their children's classmates to away games. John was a Pee Wee and Little League baseball coach touching the lives of many "Dodgers" youngsters. He was also a member of the Morenci Fire Department, Holy Cross Parish and the Beneficio Propio. Both were active advocates of the Girls' and Boys' State programs.

John had purchased two lots in Solomon in 1957and it had been a long-sought dream of theirs to return to the Gila Valley. In 1978, they moved back to what would be their home for the next 38 years. they continued their community involvement to several realms. John has been a member of American Legion for 65 years and was instrumental in establishing Lopez/Hernandez Post #95 and helped build the post home. Juan was nominated by Lopez/Hernandez Post #95 as Legionnaire of the Year in 1986. He went on to compete and won at both the area and department levels.

He served as a member of the Solomon School District government board, was a member of the VFW, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Beneficio Propio of both Greenlee and Graham countries. He held American Legion offices at the local and district level and also served as grand marshal of the Graham Fourth of July parade in 2013.

Above all else, Juan valued family. His children were fortunate to return some of what he has given them by being at his side to fill the void of his beloved Priscilla in 2010.

He is survived by: his children, Becky Navarrete (Ernie), Mary Lou Peralta (angel), John Figueroa (Sandra), and Carol Navarrete (Tommy). his legacy continues with 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves to mourn his sister, Alicia Martinez, Mile Figueroa and Joe Figueroa (Virginia).

He was predeceased by: his parents, Juan and Adela Figueroa; his wife, Priscilla; his sister, Virginia; and brothers, Roberto and Gilbert.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Tammy and the staff of Hospice of Gila Valley, and Spencer and his staff at Beehive Homes for their genuine care and concern for Juan during the past two years; and Mrs. Judy Warren for sharing weekly communion and prayer with Dad. You have all become like family to us and we are thankful for your support.

Donations can be made in Juan's name to Gila Valley Hospice or Beehive Homes.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday morning, Dec. 17, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church by Rev. Robert Rodriguez. Committal with military honors conferred by the Gila Valley Veterans Honor Guard and the United States Naval Honor Guard will follow in the Safford Cemetery.

A Rosary will be prayed Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church by Deacon Carl Vessels.

197 OBITUARY:

LOCAL CHURCH MOURNS LOSS OF HISPANIC LEADER, IMMIGRANT ADVOCATE

Jose Robles, director of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese of Phoenix who championed the rights of immigrants, died May 26.

Robles worked tirelessly on behalf of both the documented and undocumented populations in Arizona for nearly two decades. his work in immigration reform not only had him responding to the effects of a particular problem, but the cause of it.

Ignacio Rodriguez, associate director of Ethnic Ministries, has been a friend and colleague for the past 14 years.

"He was good at his job because he was a good listener, and he wanted to provide a solution to whatever issue or problem was being presented," Rodriguez said.

"He wanted to find a way to help and make things better; be it at a parish community or at the diocese, or whatever issue was before him, he's listen first and then found ways to resolve it to everyone's satisfaction."

Rodriguez said Robles worked with the poor and disadvantaged living on the margins of life, navigating the immigration system and networking to find necessary assistance.

He was connected to about 95 percent of the Hispanic population in the diocese, keeping those parishes and pastors up-to-date on current issues and providing support.

His work also sent him to the northern areas of the diocese, to places like Williams, Ashfork and Seligman because of the migrant populations.

These communities endeared themselves to Robles, who collected Christmas gifts for the families each year.

Armando Contreras, former executive director of the National Catholic Council for Hispanic Ministry and CEO of United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona, said a scholarship has been renamed in his honor.

Managed by the Catholic Community Foundation, but funded through individual donors, the Dream Scholarship Fund established in 2010 by Jim Labelle and his family, is now the Jose Robles Dream Scholarship Fund in loving memory of Robles, who served on the scholarship committee and as an advocate for Hispanic immigrants.

The scholarship provides financial assistance for immigrant students who may be otherwise be denied their dream to attend a college or university. Monies defray the cost of tuition, registration, class/lab fees and/or books.

Contreras has known Robles for the past 14 years, and collaborated with him on capacity-building workshops for parishes.

He said he remembers being inspired by his spirit of dedication to the underserved in Arizona. When they first were introduced, Robles was coordinating a campaign for an undocumented immigrant in dire need of a bone marrow transplant.

"Through his efforts, today that young lady lives," Contreras said. "Jose went above and beyond who he was. When you speak about a call to serve, he exemplified it."

Friends and colleagues said Robles was a humble man who grounded himself in Gospel values.

"He welcomed the stranger among us, which we all called to do," Contreras said.

Rodriguez said Robles was more than a coworker, he was his, "hermano".

"That's how we saw each other, as brothers in the work we were doing," he said. "I hope there's a way to honor the work he did here in the diocese because there is a hole to fill."

The visitation was June 7 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Tempe, followed by the funeral Mass the next morning.

Burial will be in his hometown of Douglas.

Robles is survived by his son Jose Philip Robles, his brother David Robles, and sister-in-law Pat Robles. He is also survived by two nieces, two nephews, three grandnephews and a grandniece.
