451 Suzanne Mary Boulay, Carlos Robles Wed

Suzanne Mary Boulay's four sisters were part of her wedding party this morning when she became the bride of Carlos Robles, Jr at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. The ceremony was at 9 o'clock and the Rev Charles B. Towner officiated.

Margot Boulay was her sister's maid of honor. Bridesmaids were M'Lou and Jacquelyn Boulay and Elva Robles the bridegroom's sister. Monica Boulay was the flower girl.

Ballerina length mint green organdy dresses were worn by the honor attendant and the bridesmaids. The dresses were tied with sashes of a deeper green and their headpieces were veils. Monica's dress was of pale yellow organdy.

The maid of honor carried an arm bouquet of pink carnations, the bridesmaids had yellow carnations and the flower girl carried a basket filled with pink and yellow carnations.

John F. Rosario served as best man. Marie Whittemore and Donald Webb were ushers.

A breakfast at the Santa Rita Hotel followed the ceremony and a wedding reception this afternoon is at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Boulay, 2934 Exeter Dr.

The newlyweds will honeymoon in California and will return June 1 to make their home at 5449 E. Hawthorne St.

The bride was graduated from Salpointe High School and her husband is a Tucson High graduate. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carlos G. Robles, 25 Calle Mirasol.

Mr. Robles attended the University of Arizona and is employed by the American Smelting and Refining Co. He plans to continue his studies at the university.

Among the wedding guests were B.R. Martinez and Mrs. Ernestine Gamble, both of Douglas; Mrs. Owen Phelps and daughter Marilyn of Fond du Lac, Wis; and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Farrell of Los Angeles.

455 The Catholic Church record of her marriage notes her date of birth in 1870.
So that is a 3rd birth date possibility for Eulogia.

I'm sticking with her date of birth on her baptism record.

456 The date of marriage is not 31 Jan 1859; it is the date of the marriage investigation by the Catholic Church.

457 The death certificate shows her name as, "Celia Butner". BUTTNER, Cecilia Robles (I_736232331)

458 The following information is from correspondence Immaculate Conception Church regarding their marriage.

They were married at Immaculate Concepcion Church located in Yuma, Arizona.

Their names were recorded as: Augustin George BUTINER
Dolores CERNA

Their parents were recorded as: Agustin BUTINER & Bertran BUTINER

Jose Maria CERNA and Rafaela AMAVISCA

The letter was signed by Priscilla Arviso, Secretary

NOTED: The spelling of both Agustin & Dolores' last names do not agree with other primary documents. Since Adolph (Agustin) consistently used the last name BUTTNER, I believe this is the correct spelling.

Re: CERNA. Probably a mistake on the part of the person registering their marriage as CERNA would not be spelled with a "C", but rather an "S" in Spanish. Again, human error.

What is interesting is that it seems neither Adolph or Dolores corrected their marriage document. A marriage certificate is considered a primary document used throughout one's life to verify an important legal date, one's marriage date.

It could be that in 1874 in Arizona Territory it was not deemed as important a document as in 2024.

462 Their marriage record shows she was from Granados, Sonora, Mexico and he was from Vicam, Sonora, Mexico.  FELIX Rivera, Francisco (I767)

463 They did not marry. Carlota had been married twice before to Bartolo Ybarra and Jose Maria Noriega. Divorce papers have not been found for either of the marriages.

Rafael & Carlota's affair began in the latter 1920's. In 1928 Gustavo Robles was born. Carlota called him, "Ernest/Ernie." In 1930 they had a daughter named Candida Gregoria who Carlota called, "Angela". Neither of the children were ever known by their legal birth names. And they did not share the Granado last name legally.

Jesus Gonzales, Rafael's wife did divorce him.

464 They had 6 children TRELLES Serna, Pedro Ignacio (I950)

465 They were married at a Phoenix Catholic Church.

466 This Robles family lived at 35 Pierce St. Superior, AZ in the 1930's and 1940's according to the Census in a rented home.

In the 1920's Census he and his wife Angela were living in Tombstone, AZ. It looks like Andres first started living in the United States in 1916.

They were living in Phoenix in 1945, at least, where Andres died. His wife and two of their children, Carmen and Manuel, are living in Phoenix in the 1950 Census.

According to the Census, Andres was a miner.

468 Thoughts from his mother Serena on his birthday:

Dear Jack-o-Bean,

Today would have been your 26th birthday. I found these pictures you took when you got your camera for Christmas in 2015. I love the way you saw the world. So much beauty in the ordinary. Forever missing you.

I love you boy-o to the moon and back.

Love,
Mom

472 Upon Mother's Day May 2025

It's been almost a year since my daughter, Kelly, died. (Apparently I only post about death. My mom, my aunt, my uncle, my car and two other beloved people all in 2021. And my wonderful dog before that.) Kelly died a week after her 23rd birthday. WAY too soon.

Kelly was a nurse. She worked at St. Francis Hospital in the Springs. She only had 2 more months before she could apply to the ER. She was very excited. Emergency medicine was where she wanted to be, with the ultimate goal of being a Flight-for-Life nurse.

Kelly was probably the most compassionate, most empathetic person you'd ever meet. She was also silly and smart and so very beautiful, inside and out. For me, her passing is a double loss, as Kelly was my best friend. We talked and texted a lot, we hung out together, we binged watched all kinds of stupid stuff and constantly shared books.

There is SO much to share about Kelly, but what I really want to reflect on this Mother's Day, is how grateful I am to be her mother. How fortunate I am to have known and loved her for even just 23 short years. She grew to be a wonderful woman and incredible human being. In fact, I have two incredible daughters, Kelly's sister, Gina, is successful, insanely smart and of course so beautiful. No parent could ask for more wonderful children. I am so proud. And I am so excited to see Gina grow and evolve. So happy for her to experience all the love and wonder this world has to offer.

So, so proud to be Kelly and Gina's mother.

If you'd like to remember Kelly, share stories, support her loved ones, and of course, toast to her honor with champagne (or a tequila shot), there will be a memorial for her on July 20 at The Millhouse in Castle Rock.

As posted on Facebook by her mother Angela on May 10, 2025

482 What's' in a Name?

The 6 children of Jesus ROBLES Noriega and Florence BRAWLEY did not use their father's last name of ROBLES.

When their parent's divorced and Florence's parents raised her children they ended up living in California.

When I spoke with Ernest Brawley, he shared quite a story about why he and his siblings used the name Brawley. It was very fanciful, but not true.

He finally admitted tome that it was highly suggested by their grandmother that they not use their Hispanic last name, but, rather use their mother's last name. The children were moving to a place where no one knew them and the children did not look Hispanic at all.

It was a racial consideration. There was considerable prejudice against Hispanics in the 1920's, 1930's and unto even today in 2025.

When you see pictures of the ROBLES-BRAWLEY children you will see how easily they passed as 'white'.

Ernest told me he did not know if they legally changed their last name to BRAWLEY. I rather doubt it. It would have been costly, maybe involve an attorney, maybe. It's more likely they simply started using their mother's last name.

All of this does not keep them from being "Robles". Them and all their descendants. You cannot change your DNA.
