Man who died outside West Field Palm Desert shoplifted from mall store
A man who died outside Westfield Palm Desert Saturday shoplifted from one of the mall's stores shortly before he died, investigators said.
Ernest Urquidez, Jr. ran away after loss prevention officers tried to detain him inside the mall, 72840 Highway 111, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Officials did not specify the name of the business or what items were taken.
The loss prevention officials did not chase Urquidez, 30.
At about 1:30., authorities were called to the mall's parking structure after Urquidez suffered a medical emergency.
Urquidez was not breathing when sheriff's deputies arrived and they performed CPR, according to the sheriff's department.
Paramedics were notified, but Urquidez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The death is still under investigation, but officials do not suspect foul play.
"The safety and security of our customers is always a priority," Francesca Forrer. the mall's marketing director, said in a statement. "We are working with local authorities regarding the incident to support their investigation."

Ernest Oscar Urquidez, Jr. touched the lives of so many when he entered this world on September 27,1984 in Indio, California. When Ernest departed to his new home in heaven on September 12, 2015 in Palm Desert, California our lord and the heavens welcomed him with open arms.
Ernest lived in the cities of San Bernardino, Indio, Colton and Riverside throughout the years of his life. Ernest enjoyed working in the restaurant business as a waiter or a manager. He loved meeting new people and shared a special bond that left an everlasting touch in their hearts.
Ernest loved to cook in his spare time, loved to help plan parties, enjoyed doing hair and makeup, and loved shopping. Ernest was the happiest when he was involved in church events.
He enjoyed listening and singing to music, always loved to be surrounded by the ones he loved, you always knew when Ernest was around because his presence lit up a room with his beautiful smile. Ernest was committed one hundred percent to supporting any cause or event that he was involved with.
Ernest entered heaven behind his mother Tina Zamora, stepdad Aurelio "Butch" Zamora Sr. his sisters, Cheriee Zamora, Kathy Zamora, Jessica Urquidez, Mariah Holt, Melanie Urquidez; his brothers, Albert Urquidez, Aurellio Zamora II, Ceaser Urquidez, Albert Zamora and his grandmother that he loved so much Marylou Armendariz. His nephews Brian Torres and Ethan Abril. His beautiful nieces Ryan Holt and Brooks Lynn Torres, the only girl that he loved with his whole heart. Ernest will be greatly missed by many, many family and friends.
