I'd been transferred after several years at the Pentagon to Kaiserslautern, also known as K-Town, Germany. Perfect place for me. Charming, still old world-ish at that time, & I was able to practice my college German. I chose to live on the economy meaning I lived in a German neighborhood some miles from the Kaserne (base). There was a church about a block from my flat that was built in the 12th C. Mind blowing for me as I was a history student. I never knew I would be so close to the work of men's hands that existed hundreds of years before me. The old church was mainly ruins when I arrived on the scene. Often I would climb the hills to sit among the ruins in peace and read a book and gaze down on the valley below me.
